Food, wonderful food<\/p>\n

Hearing that phrase may evoke the rest of the sentence, with musical accompaniment.\u00a0 \u201cFood, wonderful food, hot sausage and mustard,\u201d comes straight out of \u201cOliver.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s not to like about food?\u00a0 We enjoy it for the traditions it helps us celebrate, associations with different locations and remembrances of family members.<\/p>\n

With St. Patrick\u2019s Day rapidly approaching, tradition sets in here with corned beef and cabbage.\u00a0 Perhaps not your favorite dishes, wait for Easter.\u00a0 That might include ham and yams unless you\u2019re a lamb lover.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Thanksgiving without turkey, dressing, and pumpkin pie unless you\u2019re not from around here?\u00a0 Several years we were on a Christmas Market trip in Germany on the Rhine River. As was typical, the boat docked during the day for accompanied excursions and independent exploring.<\/p>\n

One couple chose to remain on board that day.\u00a0 The chef from the Netherlands, asked for their help.\u00a0 Would they be willing to sample something for her as she wasn\u2019t sure of the desired taste?\u00a0 Initially reluctant, they finally yielded to her repeated request for them to taste her version of pumpkin pie.\u00a0 An unknown dessert item to her, this chef was trying to replicate a Thanksgiving meal for these Yanks miles from home.\u00a0 She succeeded!<\/p>\n

Most likely we can all find a memory of meals associated with special family members.\u00a0 Maybe the matriarch made a special cobbler.\u00a0 In my case, Nanno\u2019s cherry or peach cobbler, straight out of Oklahoma, spoiled me for others\u2019 versions of that same dish.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you remember Gramma June\u2019s cabbage, carrots and celery dish,\u201d I asked my cousin Anne.\u00a0 Her answer \u2013 No \u2013 didn\u2019t fit my memory of this dish which I traditionally serve with a corned beef dinner.\u00a0 It works other times of the year as well.<\/p>\n

No matter where we enjoy our food – home, traveling or in our memories \u2013 it holds a special place in our lives beyond basic sustenance. We can think back to the musical \u201cOliver\u201d when he famously asked, \u201cMay I have more please, sir?\u201d<\/p>\n
